Issues

Four things that actually get stuck when retail and e-commerce brands post

Illustration of near-identical product packs lining a retail shelf, with one lost among them

01

Buried on the shelf and on the screen

On a shelf or a screen of near-identical packs, neither the texture nor how it feels to use comes through before people scroll past.

The fixWe follow it from unboxing to use through the buyer's eyes, showing the texture and the feel.

02

Viewers stop just short of buying

If the video never names the product or says where to get it, even an interested viewer can't find it. Views go up and revenue doesn't follow.

The fixWe show the product name and where to buy it in the video, and put it on the product page and TikTok Shop.

03

Ad spend is the only thing that grows

At hundreds of thousands of yen a video you never get more at-bats, and the budget runs out before you have tested the angles.

The fixWe film eight to ten videos a day to test the angles, and only the ones that take off go into ads.

04

The job ad never comes down

Gaps in store, logistics at peak, more hands for e-commerce. Listing fees don't come back when nobody applies, and neither the till nor restocking fits in the conditions box of a job posting.

The fixWe film one video from behind the shop floor and use it in your job ads.

POV video we have produced in retail and e-commerce

POV video from Tokyo Tenryu's pudding workshop

Retail & EC / POV

Tokyo Tenryu

Vertical video showing the back of a pudding workshop in POV and sending viewers to the online shop. One of them passed a million views on its own.

1,292 clicks a month on the shop link (5x the previous month)
Over 2m views a month from 4 posts, 2,300 new followers, 1,424 saves

There is no time in front of a shelf to explain where a product came from.
Creating that time before people get there is what video is for.

Process

How POV video for retail and e-commerce runs, from concept to delivery

Workflow

From the shoot plan through filming, editing and delivery. All you provide is the time to film

Illustration of the planning phase, where the scenes to show and the shooting order are decided

Phase01

Concept and shoot plan
  • Taking stock of the scenes to show
  • Designing the first three seconds
  • Setting the order and the number of videos

Each video is settled before filming, in a form that will clear approval.

Arrival and unboxing, the product in use, the back of the shop floor or the production line. We exhaust the subject matter along those three lines, and get the wording signed off at this stage.

Phase02

Filming
  • Eight to ten videos in a six-hour day
  • POV filming (Insta360)
  • No talent, no faces

Filming is simply a camera added to the normal working day.

One camera operator traces the buyer's line of sight. The shop floor before opening, logistics and production between stages. Unboxing and use can be shot in a studio.

Illustration of the editing phase: producing captions and thumbnails

Phase03

Editing
  • Cuts of 0.8 to 1.8 seconds
  • Swappable scene by scene
  • Wording checks and your review

We finish it at a pace people will watch, and hand it over in a form that takes revisions well.

It is built so scenes can be swapped individually, so when the business unit has a note only that cut needs changing. For multi-site work it's just the on-screen text that changes.

Illustration of the analysis phase: reading post data and iterating

Phase04

Delivery and reuse
  • As little as 7 business days
  • Secondary usage rights
  • Repurposed to ads and product pages

Not finished at delivery. The one that took off gets used to the last.

Concept to delivery in as little as seven working days. Secondary use is included, so it can go into paid social, e-commerce product pages, TikTok Shop product video and in-store screens.

FAQ

Questions we are often asked by retailers, e-commerce and consumer goods makers

Our factory and warehouse are confidential, so we can't film there. Can you still make POV video?

Yes, without going inside either. If the production line is off limits, we simply move the setting to somewhere you can get permission: arrival and use, shelves and merchandising, a pop-up. What may be filmed is listed and agreed at the first meeting.

Can you convey what's good about the product without putting anyone on camera?

It comes through better without. Moving the lead role from a person to an experience is what makes the viewer put themselves in it. The videos people watch to the end are the ones with only hands, product and sound. Where you do want people, we pair it with talent-led work and interviews.

Can we ask for production only? We'll handle posting and analysis.

Production-only engagements are welcome. Concept, filming and editing with us, posting and analysis with you. If you want posting and improvement included, see our social media management page for retail and e-commerce.

How long does delivery take? Will it make our campaign cycle?

Concept to delivery in as little as seven working days. In our experience, not having to cast talent or sign them compresses the schedule considerably. Anything with a fixed date goes into the annual plan first, and we work the shoot day back from it.

Can the videos be used in ads and on product pages? Are there any rights restrictions?

Both, and there are no rights restrictions after the engagement ends. The same video runs in paid social, on in-store screens, in sales material and as loop footage at trade shows.

Have you worked in retail or e-commerce? Could we see an example?

For Tokyo Tenryu, POV video took clicks on the online shop link to 1,292 a month, five times the month before, and four posts passed two million views in a month. The figures are on this page. When we meet, we translate it into the scenes we could film for your products.
