Social Ads for
Hair & Beauty Salons

The first decision on a salon campaign is that not a yen goes outside your catchment. Rather than joining the discounting, we shift the budget towards the reason people ask for you by name.

Issues

Three things that actually get stuck on social ads for salons

Illustration of coupon vouchers and invoices piled on a salon reception counter

01

You can't tell whether the listing fee is fair

A monthly listing fee with a booking commission on top. You can't put it out to tender, and there is nothing to compare what you currently pay against.

The fixWe report completed bookings and cost per booking, so you can compare it on the same terms as the listing fee.

02

All you're running is a discount still

Reuse one image saying 'X% off your first visit' and what you attract are clients who choose on price. They don't come back, and the gaps stay unfilled.

The fixWe run vertical video that shows the result and the process, in small budgets by angle, then move towards the winner.

03

The ads and the bookings never connect

Because bookings hand off to an external system, delivery starts with no measurement in place. All you are left with is views and likes.

The fixIn month one we set up the pixel, GA4 and UTMs, and where measurement isn't possible we make LINE sign-ups the conversion point.

Process

From checking the measurement to next month's creative brief: how it actually runs for a salon

Workflow

Illustration of ad account setup and measurement preparation

Phase01

Account setup and measurement
  • Defining the conversion point
  • Catchment and per-salon structure
  • Checking tags and landing pages

It starts with deciding what counts as one.

A first booking, a requested stylist, a LINE sign-up, an application. We decide what counts as one, then set up the pixel, CAPI, GA4 and UTMs.

Phase02

Creative production
  • Several videos per angle
  • Vertical video and stills
  • Wording checked in advance

Honestly, one discount image gives you nothing to compare.

The stylist as a person, results you can repeat, how a first visit goes. We produce vertical video for each angle in batch shoots that never interrupt trading.

Phase03

Test campaigns and winner selection
  • Small tests inside the catchment
  • Judged on early data
  • Only winners go to full delivery

Budget goes in once the data has confirmed it.

We run several small deliveries inside the catchment at once, and judge what survives on CPM, retention, click-through and early booking numbers.

Phase04

Optimise and scale
  • Budget reallocation
  • Swapping the hook
  • Two-week iteration cycle

In a small catchment, the same ad has a surprisingly short life.

Budget moves to what is performing. Watching frequency, we add variants with new openings to extend the life.

Phase05

Reporting and next month's plan
  • Monthly reporting
  • Reconciling with the booking diary
  • Next month's creative brief

What leads the report is bookings, not views.

Reporting is led by completed bookings, cost per booking and LINE sign-ups, and comes with the brief for next month's creative.

FAQ

Questions we are often asked by salons

Hot Pepper Beauty, are you suggesting we drop it?

We are not. Keep the listing as it is. Our position is to grow a booking channel of your own alongside it, so you have something to judge whether the listing fee and commission are fair.

What budget can we start on, and how is your fee structured?

There are two fee structures: fully performance-based and management-fee based. Performance-based suits conversions that complete online, like a booking; a management fee suits awareness work and concentrated pushes. For a guide to the figures, see social ads pricing.

Other than a coupon discount, what should we be advertising?

The stylist someone wants to be seen by, results you can repeat, and a first visit that can't go wrong. We build each as a separate angle and move towards whatever the small tests show is working.

We use a booking system like SALON BOARD or Reservia. Can bookings still be measured?

Where bookings hand off to another domain, we check how far they can be tracked before delivery starts. Where they can't, we substitute LINE sign-ups or arrivals at the booking form as the conversion point.

Can we use advertising to grow job applications rather than bookings?

We run recruitment advertising too. Video showing a day in the job as it really is, delivered inside commuting distance and to areas with lots of beauty students, with applications received over LINE.

Can we use posts from an individual stylist's account as ads?

If a post has taken off, it can run as it is through Spark Ads or partnership ads. The condition is that their consent and the scope of secondary use are agreed first.
